Overview
Today‘s businesses rely on networks that are more complex, geographically and organizationally dispersed, and virtualized than ever before. Security is also becoming an increasing concern. A rising number of attacks (internal and external) are forcing companies to introduce new security policies and tighten existing ones. De-Militarized Zones (DMZs), for example, separate a set of elements from the intranet through a firewall for security purposes, while servers and applications are used to enable commercial and end-user business.
Huge technology investments have been made over the years that use SNMP and/or ICMP as today’s de-facto standard management protocols—however, these protocols can violate security policies in some cases. These protocols are also routinely used to manage elements and business processes in remote DMZs that require complete visibility into the infrastructure.
The SPECTRUM® Secure Domain Manager (SDM) solution enables domains to be securely managed by tunneling SNMP and ICMP traffic through an SSL connection. Only a single hole needs to be punched into the firewall, allowing for extended manageability without impacting security policies currently in place. The solution is completely transparent to the end user and all client applications, and no additional administrative tasks are necessary.
